I’ve seen it – and lived it for decades. But it wasn’t until recently when I invested the time to think critically about the patterns I was observing did I figure out what to do about it.
Capable leaders being passed over for promotion. Innovative businesses struggling to gain traction. Experts with decades of experience finding it difficult to transition into new roles, or industries. Companies evolving, but the market holds on to outdated versions of them.
The problem is that humans (and now AI systems) don’t fully understand the value being offered.
Today, that challenge is becoming even more complex. Buyers, decision-makers, and increasingly AI systems must quickly interpret, categorize, and evaluate enormous amounts of information. When value is misunderstood, it can be overlooked. When value is overlooked, businesses can struggle to grow, and leaders can be passed over.

About the Founder
Loralyn Mears
PhD is the founder of STEERus.
She is a scientist, an educator, an author, an instructional designer, a trainer, and a business strategist. Over the past two decades, Loralyn has worked in both public-sector and private-sector environments across science, workforce development, entrepreneurship, market research, leadership training, and technology. This unusually broad background led her to identify a recurring pattern: valuable people and businesses are often overlooked because others misunderstand the value they bring.
She has designed and delivered leadership and professional training programs across public-sector and private-sector organizations.
Loralyn is the author of MISINTERPRETED: The Hidden Risk Making Brands & Leaders Invisible in the Age of AI, a book that explores why valuable people and businesses are increasingly being misunderstood by both humans and AI systems.
She is also the host of the ranked podcast, Small Business Stories, now in Season 6, where she interviews entrepreneurs, experts, and small business owners about the challenges of building trust, credibility, visibility, and growth in a rapidly changing world.
